Isabelle Lefort, co-founder of Paris Good Fashion, presented the first version of the Matrice des matières premières, an information and comparison tool for materials used in fashion. The presentation took place at the Première Vision Paris September 2026 trade show, which supports the project and took part in developing the application.
The Matrice was developed with Paris Good Fashion members and several players from the fashion industry. Canopy, a Canadian environmental ONG, notably took part in the work on innovative materials. The preparatory work lasted more than six months.
Sixty materials, twelve criteria
This first version brings together sixty materials or material variants, examined through twelve different criteria. L'outil is accessible free of charge, in French, English and Italian. L'objectif stated is to gather in a single tool information that had until now been scattered among companies, professional organisations, ONGs and research work.
No score or price
Pas Good Fashion would document the impact of materials without offering a definitive score, on the grounds that different databases and methodologies would produce results that would not necessarily agree. The Matrice would also not give prices: certain materials, notably cotton, would see highly variable prices, and that of innovations could change considerably depending on the volumes ordered and production conditions.
L'organisation would have chosen not to oversimplify the fact sheets, the complexity of materials requiring, in its view, that useful nuances be kept for decision-making rather than offering a simplified good or bad material answer. The fact sheets include references allowing users to trace back to the sources: Textile Exchange annual reports, academic work and data or publications from professional organisations.
Presented as a first version, the tool is set to evolve based on feedback from its users. Paris Good Fashion plans to enrich the application and its content in the coming months.
